Getting back into the game

It's been quite along time since I've last updated my blog but i plan on doing updates 3-4 times a week once i start playing poker again on a regular basis. For those of you that don't know, i went on a sick run in September of '08. I deposited roughly $600, within a week i had taken down the biggest tournament of my life at the time, winning alittle under $700, which brought my bankroll to roughly $1400. It was at this time that i was on vacation from work, and within that week i turned that $1400 to $5200, which at the time was alittle over $6000 Canadian. Of course it all came crashing down one night when i wasn't in the right state of mind to be playing poker, and within 3 hours i was broke. Let that be a lesson to everyone, no matter how good of a poker player you are, if you continue to bring your whole roll to one table you will go broke. So that's what happened i went broke playing $10000NL.

Over the course of the last 7 months i continued to play poker and grind it out and had success, but still in the back in my mind was what happened that night in October. I have not made any major deposits on a poker site in months but this Friday may 22ND i will be making a large deposit, to get myself back in the game. After alot of thought, i have decided to stray away from the main stream sites (Poker stars/Full tilt poker) and focus on a site that has a history of weak players and soft tournaments. Pacific Poker will be my home for the time being. Although their software is not the greatest there is such a great sign up bonus that it couldn't be ignored. They are offering a 125% sign up bonus. 50% up front as a instant bonus and a 75% pending bonus which i will need to accumulate a set amount of points to unlock the money. What this means is, I will be depositing $300, so i will get a 50% instant bonus that will be added to my bankroll right away ($150) and a pending bonus of 75% equal to $225. Needless to say this is an offer i couldn't pass up. So with a starting bankroll of roughly $400-$450 i will be playing 25nl until i build my bankroll to $1000 then I'll move on to 50nl and take it from there.

Well that's everything for now, just wanted to give a quick update on what my plans for the future.

See ya at the tables

Mid October update

It's been about a week and a half since my last post mostly because i finished my two week vacation on the 8th and since then i've been pretty busy with work and life in general.
I was hoping i would have as much success in October as i did in September, but it's been alittle on the slow side. I have managed to grind my way up from about $4,300 to just under $5,000 in the last 10 days so i am happy about that.

On the tournament front, no big cashes to share. However the two $5 KO tournaments on FTP that i have entered i have went pretty deep. With fields of 826 and 805 people, i managed to finish 16th and 11th, so not a bad return on my money. I feel overall i'm playing pretty solid poker, except that lately my heads up game has seemed to slipped alittle.
My strong point of my poker game has always been heads up, where you can put a great deal of pressure on your oppoinents. Lately my results have been terrible. My record over this slump is 2-9. Winning 2 of 11 heads up matches won't cut it so i'm going to look into working more on that part of my game.
The reason for my slump is my head really isn't in the game, mostly because i continue to play small buyin heads up matches ($5-$10) So i'm going to move up in limits where the money means alittle more and i will concentrate. I will probably start playing $20-$50 heads up matches tomorrow on my day off and see how that goes. :)

Moving Up In Limits

After alot of hours grinding it out on the vitual felt, i finally have sercured a good sized bankroll where i feel comfortable moving up in stakes.

I tend to go with a 30 buyin rule, which means in order to play a specific stake i must have a minimum of 30 max buyins for that level. So in keeping with this i moved up from $.25/.50 (50NL) to $.5/1 (100NL) with mixed results. Started out slow but once i found my groove i ended up turning a small profit of about $75, which is not bad for 1 hours work.

Today was just a trial run, i will start putting in some solid hours tomorrow and over the weekend. Later tonight i've desided that i'm hit some tournaments on FTP which include, the $5, $10, and $24 KO's, Midnight Madness and both the Daily Doubles.

Monthly Tournament/Cash game Earnings

TOURNAMENT CASH GAMES

August- $683.00 $-287.00
September- $1097.00 $1496.00

The Poker Grind

I started my poker career in 2005, playing small buyin tournaments in bars and pool halls. I had some success, but not as much as i thought i would. Back then i really felt that i was a great poker player. Only now do i realize that i knew almost next to nothing about the game of hold'em at the time.

My game has flurished in the past 3 years, and as of late my tournament poker game is starting gel. Taking down two tournaments one on August 30th with a field of 229 players for a payday of $367 and then another one on September 12th with a field of 718 players for $689. So although mostly a cash game player, im going to begin the transition of spliting my time between cash games and tournaments. You can find me on a daily basis at Fulltiltpoker.com playing under the name canadianpoker83
